Along with Schulz, the philosophers of the early 20 th century struggled to objectively study the subjective topic of phenomenology. Norberg-Schulz, Christian Architecture represents a means to give man an “existential foothold”. Man cannot gain a foothold trough scientific understanding alone. He needs symbols, that is, works of art (…the purpose of the work of art is to “keep” and transmit meanings) which “represent life-situations”. Norberg-Schulz explicitly adopts a phenomenological and Heideggerian approach, suggesting (p.5) that: “the spaces where life occurs are places …A place is a space which has a distinct character. Norberg-Schulz was part of the Modernist Movement in architecture and associated with architectural phenomenology.
